  7.     Bernadette Peters may have played the Witch in the musical
  8. Into the Woods, but she's a wide-eyed waif when it comes to
  9. Slaves of New York, the movie of Tama Janowitz's 1986
  10. subculture novel, due in March. Though raised in nearby Queens,
  11. Peters found the film's Manhattan settings alien. "It's a whole
  12. other world," says Peters. "People live in burned-out
  13. buildings." Janowitz, who has a cameo, thinks Peters has
  14. "downtown flair." As for her own movie debut, the author admits
  15. flubbing her lines, "which was funny because I wrote them
  16. myself."
